Volunteer Information

E-mail Print PDF

We’ve hosted volunteers and interns from around the world for over four years. As a volunteer for AFAWI, you’ll support development of the most vulnerable people in society. You’ll experience the Ghanaian way of life, living and working with local people and making a difference to the quality of their lives.

What can I do?

There are a range of opportunities available, depending on your specific interests, skills and experience. We’ll spend time discussing these with you to make sure you’re assigned to a program that suits you.

Examples of areas you could work in include:

  • community and youth development
  • women’s rights programs
  • education
  • water and sanitation
  • research
  • HIV/AIDS and reproductive health programs

How long for?
Volunteer and intern programs last from two to six months including a five day orientation in Accra when you first arrive when you’ll be taught about the local culture and language.

Who will I be working with?

You’ll be placed in existing projects working with local people and volunteers from AFAWI and other international volunteer organisations.

Where will I be living?
We believe that it’s important for you to become fully immersed in the local culture wherever you work, so all our volunteers live with a host family a short distance from their project.

We carefully select our host families to ensure all our volunteers enjoy their experience in a welcoming Ghanaian community. Your host will help you to settle into the local area and you might be living with another volunteer.
